I don't think that it's possible (in the next millenium) that there will be no (or very little) people who devote their lives to religion. Religion will always find it's place when people are desperate and afraid of personal responsibility. Even if every single parent in the world gives it's child a free choice based on the facts, weak people will still believe there is a reason behind everything in their life that DOESN'T involve them. People like making others responsible (or in this case, the devil, or god) for their misfortunes and blunders.
It's a strong human impulse to seek justice, and it's much easier for the unrealistic and weak to accept that the world is perfectly fair since there will be punishments in the afterlife. In reality, nothing can be entirely fair and entirely perfect.
