Slax 6.1.2 is here

written by Tomas M. 2 years ago

It's finally here. What's new? Well, few bugs were fixed, KDE didn't change, FireFox 3.5.1 has been added (yes I know there is already 3.5.2, bad luck I didn't look just before the release).

That's not all. A new thing. But still very old, well known. Let me introduce ... WINDOWS SHARING ON THE DESKTOP! hehe :)

This Slax release adds an icon at the Slax desktop, which is labeled as 'Slax Drive'. After you click on it, you'll get a dialog for login and password. Don't be afraid, simply click the button at the bottom of the dialog to register your personal Slax drive. It's a network disk, you'll need Slax Account in order to register it. You'll get 30MB for free, just to test if this is something for you. If you like it, you may buy additional storage.

You may put there anything you like. I hope somebody will like it.

I'm not sure if this is even interesting for anybody ... we will see. Even if you don't like it, it's still a way how to support Slax financially - so if you have spare 3 dollars monthly, and I am sure you have, please consider buying the 1GB plan. Thanks! :)

The good news is (or is it a bad news?), you can Map your Slax Drive even in Windows. Just grab a tiny program SlaxDrive.exe (25KB) and map it as S:\ for example. Again, I hope somebody will find it useful. We will see :) In all cases, I would like to kindly ask you for comments, so I could see if you like the idea or not. Thank you!

Hi Tomas,

Will data stored on the personal 'Slax Drive' be backed up?

Thanx for a fantastic live distro! Slax/Slackware forever! :o)

sorry bout previous blank.
will the drive expire if not used for a long time?
it's great for back-up of custom configurations.
thank you!

I'll have to give it some test laps. Good thing you put Firefox in it's own module. Sun and Adobe have been busy with updates too. Darn hacker conferences, always prompting waves of patches.

WOW!!! That's just a great idea, and a great way to support the project!
Very futuristic in terms of OS transparency - a great way to share your files! :)

Keep up the good work!

Tomas M. said: "3 dollar monthly", that means every month

Slax has been a superb Live CD for me - light fast and very slick. Thanks for making it so nice. I have yet to use the modules feature, but without that too "it just works" and works well. Well, certain stupid workplace restrictions prevent me from using Slax as my main machine. Still, it's awesome.
Thanks for the great work.

Is there gonna be a slax6.2.1 (a PAE version)?

I just downloaded slax6.1.2, not tested yet
but looking forward to

[10] Tomas M wrote 2 years ago:

Yes I plan to release 6.2.2, which will be the same like 6.1.2 but with PAE.

Thanks Tomas for new slax release.

Now to me is working fine DRI with fglrx driver in games like WOP.
Performance is good and without freezes. This means that DRI performance slax is OK.

I will upgrade my slax system from 2.6.24.5 to 2.6.27.27 slax 6.1.2.

:)

Thanks for the new release. As usual I could not use it in my laptop because there is no wireless connectivity, I added wireless assistant end now I have the perfect distro.

Another thin I brought my 6.2 zettings.lzm file and there I was with all my settings. nothing lost and it's portable.

Yay, SLAX is the best! I wish my TV tuner card was supported :(

Could the next development be an easier installation, so that a dual boot mode is enabled?

Keep up with the great job!

Instaler please make one good instaler for Slax imidetly...

[15] zlatko wrote 2 years ago:

When we can espect installer for Slax?

[16] ishaan wrote 2 years ago:

Umm.. when would slax 6.2.2 be available tentatively..
Also, is slax 6.1.2 as slow as 6.0.9 or is there a large jump in speed because on my laptop (6month old - so not shabby spec'd) it would be quite slow and doing simple c programs was a hassle..
but still the whole thing is great, just a few kinks to settle!

Thomas, thanks for this distro !
Lightning, thanks for the torrent link !

This distro really need a torrent link directly on the official site. More relaible for me with my unsafe internet link and best download rate too.

Cheers!

Dear Mr Tomas M
Your 6.1.2 is a great step forward
Your slaxdrive is a good idea, it give us the reason to make our boss let us support slax in a near future, you know 2 $ in your country may be is nearly nothing but in our poor homeland, it can feed a small family in one day

I want to express my option about the 6.1.2 version
I do not know why you strip flex and bison out of its
I love slax because it has many lib and tool as slackware and it is portable
Firefox module is not a bad idea but everyone can add this module after they have slax so I do not think it is necessary

i hope that you can add some lib that allow us to compile some thing like R language package. We can compile it very easy in slackware but we can not do it in slax

We come to slax because we believe that slax provides us more lib and tool than any small or medium distro allowing us to compile at ease
if we need some blink application , we had chosen another one like puppy, or mandriva, ubuntu

I hope that I do not bother you

Your faithfully

Le Hoang Long

Slax 6.1.2 freezes at disk loading in kde. It is the second time that I get that problem. What is there to do? Anybody else with that type of bug?

You can't add your comment any longer since the post is too old.
