What is the purpose of life?

written by Tomas M. 1 year ago

In the previous post's video, Richard Dawkins discussed the purpose of purpose: a human mind needs a purpose for everything, and most people think that everything HAS a purpose, even things without one. For most people the only way to see the absurdity is to think about the purpose of purpose.

When I was young, we were told that the purpose of life is to live our lives the right way to go to heaven after we die. Religion gave us the ultimate answer of the purpose of our lives - to test our conformance to God, in order to be rewarded by a pleasant afterlife.

But lets think a little more about it. What would be the purpose of the afterlife then? After we finally made it to the heaven, we would enjoy our afterlife and be happy. What would be the purpose of our existence? It doesn't make sense. Couldn't we just enjoy our lives just right now for the same purpose? The ultimate answer provided by all religions is a mental fallacy. We don't need a purpose. We make our purpose ourselves. 52 comments

The purpose of purpose

written by Tomas M. 1 year ago

Have you ever wondered why are we here? You may find the answer in the following video.

During Richard Dawkins' American tour in March 2009, he gave a talk titled "The Purpose of Purpose". The talks were filmed and edited together here. The content of the talk remains intact, while the editing moves between the different locations and Richard's Keynote presentation.

Squashfs LZMA support

written by Tomas M. 1 year ago

Phillip Lougher, the author of SquashFS, works already on the LZMA support, which should be included in mainline kernel.

Quote from Phillip:
I started working on LZMA support a couple of days ago. I'm hoping to get it finished for the 2.6.31 merge window, though I may miss this. It depends on whether I hit any problems, and how soon the merge window closes.
End quote;

There doesn't seem to be the LZMA code for squashfs in 2.6.31, but I can see several patches in mainline from Phillip with some LZMA bugfixes, so it appears he is really doing something with it (and he fixes LZMA code as he sees problems).

I hope to see LZMA support for mainlined squashfs in 2.6.32. Then I can start working on Slax 7. 38 comments

Power of prayer

written by Tomas M. 1 year ago

Do you think that prayers work? Then you are superstitious. It has been shown many times that it has no effect whatsoever. You may try few experiments for yourself. Prayer is equivalent to horseshit. I meant, horseshoe. And horseshit too.

After understanding that prayer is a superstition, do you still pray? What do you pray for? I used to pray too, but now I would feel like an idiot... 46 comments

How to use Slax Drive from other Linuxes

written by Tomas M. 1 year ago

Slax Drive is currently available for Slax and for Windows. There are no official packages for other distros yet, but still it is possible to use it in any distro you like.

Here is a short script for shell to connect the drive in any other Linux:

#!/bin/bash
USRNME=aaa # change this
export PASSWD=bbb # change this
SERVER=$(wget -qO - http://www.slax.org/slax_drive.php?userurl=$USRNME)
mkdir -p /mnt/slaxdrive
mount -t cifs -o username=$USRNME,file_mode=0600,dir_mode=0700,directio \
//$SERVER/$USRNME /mnt/slaxdrive

That's all.
I didn't test it though, so please report your success :)
Thank you

EDIT: I added 'export' keyword at the beginning of password definition line. 15 comments

Slax Drive FAQ

written by Tomas M. 1 year ago

It's just few hours since the latest Slax has been released and there are already several Slax Drive users. Moreover I received many questions abount it, so I guess I should explain it here a little more.

First of all, you are asking about the free storage limit. How much it is? Currently it is set to 30MB and it's for free for lifetime. There is currently enough disk space on the server so there is no expiration for free Slax Drives (even if not used for a long time). On the other hand, after some time, if the service is too popular and if there are not enough buyers, I may decide to delete old unused drives.

Next question I noticed at this blog is whether the payment $3.42 for 1 GB is for lifetime. No, of course not. All plan payments are for one month. I have to pay the server costs every month, so I have to get your money monthly too.

Another question is about backups. Currently there is no backup procedure implemented, since it would take some additional costs which I... more 26 comments

Slax 6.1.2 is here

written by Tomas M. 1 year ago

It's finally here. What's new? Well, few bugs were fixed, KDE didn't change, FireFox 3.5.1 has been added (yes I know there is already 3.5.2, bad luck I didn't look just before the release).

That's not all. A new thing. But still very old, well known. Let me introduce ... WINDOWS SHARING ON THE DESKTOP! hehe :)

This Slax release adds an icon at the Slax desktop, which is labeled as 'Slax Drive'. After you click on it, you'll get a dialog for login and password. Don't be afraid, simply click the button at the bottom of the dialog to register your personal Slax drive. It's a network disk, you'll need Slax Account in order to register it. You'll get 30MB for free, just to test if this is something for you. If you like it, you may buy additional storage.

You may put there anything you like. I hope somebody will like it.

I'm not sure if this is even interesting for anybody ... we will see. Even if you don't like it, it's still a way how to support Slax financially - so if you... more 1168 comments

New Slax, old KDE and a surprise

written by Tomas M. 1 year ago

I'm going to release another version of Slax in few days. There will be some small chanegs, like kernel upgrade from 2.6.27.8 to 2.6.27.27, and some bigger ones. KDE will remain unchanged (version 3.5.x)

Regarding the mentioned kernel upgrade, I am not interested in newest kernels nowadays since I am not willing to switch to the newest squashfs yet. As you perhaps know, squashfs 4.0 is in mainline kernel and as far as I understand it, it doesn't support older versions of the filesystem (please tell me if I am wrong). Due to that, all Slax modules would stop working, which is something unneeded in the phase of Slax 6.x. (That will be the destiny of Slax 7)

The surprise I mentioned is very interesting (at least I hope it is). There are two new features. I can tell you just the first one, and I'll keep the second one secret yet. So the first one is, FireFox 3.5. is going to be included in base Slax. It will be packaged with Chromium visual theme and will understand the slik:/... more 38 comments
